The have made their names known collaborating with various underground heads but they finally have released their 2nd album, Joe & Insanate's Excellent LP. New Album: Marz the Superior - Rise and Downfall

Malcolm X. Martin Luther King, Jr. Muhammad Ali. Bob Marley. Jimi Hendrix. Tupac Shakur. Christopher Wallace. Marz the Superior graces the cover to his newest release, Rise and Downfall, with some of the greatest company anybody can ever wish to be around. They all had their rise to the highest plateau that anybody can aspire for...and then had their quick downfall, respectively. He's trying to send a message: he belongs within this crowd and will do what it takes for that to happen. Marz is part of the Louisiana-based buzzmaking group The Kingmakers, and look out for more music from that camp in 2012 and beyond.

New Album: Ras Kass & Doc Hollywood - Spit No Evil

West Coast legend Ras Kass has teamed up with up and coming beatmakers Doc Hollywood (made of singer/producer Louie Rubio and DJ/rapper Lex Larson) to create a perfect clash of old school and new school. Again, DJBooth is behind the release of the free LP and they picked a good one to back. The tape features 14 tracks, features from Kat Graham& Dirt Nasty, and perfect chemistry between Ras Kassiano and Doc Hollywood.

New Album: Cidida & Eibol - Ludwig, Can You Hear Me?

New York based Eibol and Cidida (both hail from the Big Apple) have released their long buzzed-about collaboration project, Ludwig, Can You Hear Me?. The album is a tribute to the late great Ludwig van Beethoven, with Eibol playing all the instrumentation from scratch (Live instrumentation? Yes please!) on all of the tracks throughout the album, with the exception of "I Want You". 2012 has already been flowing with very unique projects and Ludwig, Can You Hear Me? is no exception. Cidida's conscious flowing through Eibol's expertly crafted tracks shows that there is no line that divides what and what can not be used as the base to make our beloved genre. The creative minds of Cidida and Eibol are prime examples of why hip-hop is still thriving in 2012.

Jazz-fusion trio BADBADNOTGOOD has released their 2nd official studio album for free. The album features covers of songs from Kanye West, James Blake, and Odd Future, among others. Their jazzy play on the originals is awesome and definitely a fresh of breath air. The album also has features from Leland Witty and Laun Phung. Check it out if you're into projects that put a creative spin on covers of other songs. BADBADNOTGOOD are experts at that.

New Album: Otitis - Audioraincloud

Ok. not necessarily "new" (it's been out since February) but the latest release from the extraordinarily talented producer Otitis is worth every spotlight it can catch. Otitis has been doing his thing since 2006 and since then has released a plethora of material, from solo projects to collaboration albums with MCs to entire remix albums. His style is the definition of versatile, ranging from club bangars to soundtracks to the most underground while sampling soul music to rock. Audioraincloud is his fourth instrumental-only release. His goal with this project was to make a beat for every part of a storm - the calm before, the violent parts, the eye of the storm, and the most relaxing parts. The accuracy of the emotions that Otitis tries to convey is incredible with this project and every instrumental hip-hop junkie WILL love this album and even if you don't dig the instrumental side of the hip-hop world, there is no reason not to appreciate the fresh breath of air that this concept album brings. Check it and love it.

New Album: Madlib & Georgia Anne Muldrow - Seeds

Prolific producer Madlib and the immensely talented singer Georgia Anne Muldrow have joined forces for their new output, Seeds. Madlib is definitely no stranger to collaborating with other artists of genres other than hip-hop. His crossing over actually brings out the best of him, and i's evident here with Muldrow's beautiful and soulful voice over the intricately laced up music that Madlib has constructed to back her up.

Maybach Music Group foot soldier and Miami native Gunplay has dropped his latest free tape, Short Fuse. The tape gained a nice amount of buzz after Gunplay's awesome feature in Kendrick Lamar's latest release "Cartoons & Cereal". Gunplay, also a member of the Triple Cs, brings the MMG brand of hip-hop a good name with this release.

New Mixtape: Wiz Khalifa - Taylor Allderdice

Wiz Khalifa exploded into the mainstream scene only a couple of years ago with his big single "Black and Yellow." That in turned spawned what would be a wild ride for the Pittsburgh MC in 2011. Wiz Khalifa has been known to drop very high quality mixtapes, and with his poorly-received major label debut Rolling Papers being his last solo effort, fans are eager to hear what he has to bring to the table.

New Mixtape: Just S.T.R.E.S.S. - Bouncing Hi-Hat and Spoken Words

As you probably know based off of some of our past features, I'm a sucker for sweet beat tapes. I stumbled upon this gold nugget while looking up beats that sampled the late great Gil Scott-Heron. Just S.T.R.E.S.S. samples the legendary voice in all 8 tracks of this short but sweet little tape. Gil Scott-Heron and hip-hop goes hand in hand so a project like this was long overdue. New Album: Nasty P - Story So Far

Coming straight from the underground of Scotland comes the extremely talented producer Nasty P, ready set to drop his debut album Story So Far. Nasty P has been causing waves over in Scotland but really hasnt made much of a ripple with the heads in the States. That's a shame, as his style of taking old-school techniques of dusty soul samples mixed with his obvious fondness of the golden era (Mobb Deep, KRS-One, Large Professor, Notorious B.I.G., and Snoop Dogg vocal samples in the first 3 tracks alone) is very familiar but also very welcome for all the production aficionados out there. He lets the beats speak for themselves, lacing them with pretty well-known vocal samples and soulful chops but there is also the occasional MC track. Nasty P recruits some top-of-the-line MC's for the rapping tracks, including Jurassic 5's Akil (a golden era product), Ed O.G. (another golden era product), and Mello Music Group's Oddisee.  Nasty P's production seemingly changes when it knows it has to; song structures change when an MC is in the mix and when there are no bars, things get wild. I'd love to see Nasty P get a little buzz off of this project and hopefully get propelled into more discussion. Hopefully he reaches some more crossover success from Scotland and if he does, hopefully he brings his boys with him.

New Mixtape: Green Ova Records - Diamonds of God EP

This free mixtape was released in the middle of February but it went right under my radar. The Bay Area-based Green Ova Records quickly became one of my favorite labels for new releases after a very eventful 2011. Their first release of 2012, the record label compilation Diamonds of God EP, features Green Ova artists Main Attrakionz (Squadda Bambino and Mondre Man), LOLO, Dope G, and Robbie Rob lacing up their trademark lo-fi sound over spacey, thick sample-driven beats. Green Ova is often dubbed as "cloud rap", and this release, all 8 tracks, is a good sampler for what their sound consists of and serves as a little tease for what to expect from the Green Ova camp in the coming months. Believe me, you're going to be hearing a lot from these guys.

New Remix Album: Chi Duly - Balloons of Haus (House of Balloons Remix Album)

Seeing how the Kanye West mash-up was really well received, I decided to share another great remix project that I discovered today. Brooklyn producer Chi Duly follows up his critically acclaimed Drake X Coldplay mash-up tape October's Very Own. It was only natural, as it seems, to remix The Weeknd's own critically acclaimed 2011 mixtape House of Balloons and turn it into an uptempo house/R&B hybrid...Weeknd style.

New Album: Grynch - Perspective

Seattle rapper, Grynch, just released his new album Perspective.  This is the first time I have heard of the guy, but he has great lyrics filled with memorable and truthful rhymes.  My favorite track on the album is "Drowning" because it shows weakness.  It proves he is honest, and that is a rare thing in rap these days.  Grynch is very clever with his lyrics, and he had great production on this album.  The producers who participated are Budo, Jake One, ATG, Jester, and more.  For features on the album he has Brother Ali, Shaprece, Sol, and quite a few others.  The last track "Final Bow" ties the whole album together, and gives you good closure.  Grynch has been pretty quiet for a couple years, but now he is back and his album is definitely worth checking out.

New Mixtape: Sha Stimuli - The Chills (Broke at 30)

Sha Stimuli drops his 2nd EP The Rent Series, a series of projects that Stimuli hopes will help him pay his rent. Aside from that, he hopes The Rent Series will shed some light on the common man, which is evident by his understanding of the blue-collar worker on the 2 EPs released thus far. Stimuli has been a staple in premier underground hip-hop, so The Chills (Broke at 30) is a nice addition to the already impressive early list of 2012 releases.

New Beattape: Paradox - Habits

Paradox is a very talented 18 year-old hip-hop producer hailing from Upstate New York. With aspiritions to work with a wide range of rappers, Paradox is on a mission to construct an impressive instrumental hip-hop catalog to showcase the talents that he was blessed with. Everybody has different taste buds in beats, and Paradox is trying to satisfy as many as he can. Paradox likes to think of himself as a sound engineer as well as a beatsmith; mixing a very impressive ear for samples (which is evident by "Ohf" and "Boom Slap" on Habits) and an expert mastering ability. Paradox does not believe in being strapped down by a niche, and as a result he does not stick to a particular "signature sound". Habits is his 2nd beattape and is by far his best work.

Also, Paradox runs a very impressive blog called The Roll Off. He is always on top of the latest happenings in the entertainment world and is always covering the latest free music releases. I strongly recommend following the site.

Artist Interview: CASTLE

Last week, Greensboro, NC producer and rapper CASTLE and his new EP Tasting was featured on Oh.Globe. You can check out the article here. I had a chance to get to know the artist a little better, seeing how he is collaborating with some pretty big names. We talked his up bringing, his future collaborations, and even his thoughts of quitting. Check it out.


Me: You listed a bunch of East Coast artists as influences to your music. Being from NC, have any Southern artists influenced you?

CASTLE: No Limit and Outkast were big influences on me when I was a kid. Outkast satisfied my need for complexity, and No Limit was just live.

Me: What was your favorite No Limit release?

CASTLE: As far as albums? Good Girl Gone Bad by Mia X. she was hands down the best MC in that crew to me.

Me: What was it like to grow up in a household full of musicians?

CASTLE: Loud. Haha. Music was played constantly in my house, from blues to rap to hard rock.

Me: Did that wide range of genres played influence your sample choices for your beats in the future?

CASTLE: Definitely. There's a good number of beat makers that stick to soul records, which is cool...but there's so many different sounds you can play with in genres like blues or psych rock. I say about 80% of records I sample are from foreign musicians.

Me: When you told me about yourself for the Artist Spotlight, you mentioned that your dad put you on a track when you were a kid. What happened to that track?

CASTLE: In cassette tape heaven more than likely. Haha. If i could find it again, I would release it in a second. It'd be a good laugh.

Me: What did you do?

CASTLE: To the tape?

Me: On the song.

CASTLE: Ah, yes. I blessed the track with one bar. It was a song about how bratty me and my sister was.

Me: I first heard about you through a wall post from producer Small Professor's Facebook. Apparently you two are working together. How did you meet him?

CASTLE: Okayplayer.com, but we actually didn't start talking until I got the balls to create a Twitter account. I reached out to him, told him I was a big fan of the music he shared on the boards, and we've been linked up ever since. Smalls is a cool ass dude.

Me: What kinda stuff do you guys have planned?

CASTLE: We've toyed with this idea called N*ggas with Physics Books or N.W.P.B., since me and smalls are science geeks. If all goes according to plan, we'll have an album's worth of material before the year ends. All we really have to do is decide how it's ultimately going to sound.

Me: That would be really sick. Would you rap over his beats or would you add production too?

CASTLE: A mixture of both, which was his idea. I actually had no intention of rapping on it at first. I'm excited to get to work though.

Me: Besides Small Pro, who else are you in the lab with?

CASTLE: Right now I'm working with the members of a crew that Smalls is a part of: The Wrecking Crew. Has-Lo, Zilla Rocca, and Curly Castro. Crazy MC's. I'm also working with a producer named Why?Arcka. That guy is incredible on the beats. Then there's a group called Loud Gang that I've been producing for. They have some stuff coming pretty soon. There's more, but the list is too long. Collaborating is my mission this year.

Me: You also mentioned thoughts about quitting. Why is that?

CASTLE: Talking out of my ass for the most part. Every time I tell myself that music isn't worth it and "quit", I end up coming right back. Unfortunately they don't have clinics for recovering hip hop junkies. I did have to take a short hiatus though. Needed to find my bearings; start resting more, eating healthier, et cetera.

Me: If someone was to ask you "Who the hell is CASTLE and why should I listen to him?", what would you respond with?

CASTLE: I'd tell them "because CASTLE 'creates art so that life elevates.' you want those groceries in plastic or paper bags?"

Me: Haha, well your music backs up the talk. Good luck to everything you do with your music man and just know that Oh.Globe has your back with any of your future releases and collabs.

CASTLE: Word 'em up. I 'preciate you taking time out to listen and getting to know me.

New Mixtape: LP da Original - No Organization No Progress

Canada has turned into quite the hotbed for the newest raw hip-hop. Straight outta Rexdale comes LP da Original, an El Salvadoian-Canadian rapper who is taking the Canadian scene by storm. With a co-sign from Canadian hip-hop legend Kwajo Cinqo (member of Ghetto Concept), LP has dropped his newest free mixtape, No Organization No Progress on G7 Records and presented by Trap-A-Holics. The mixtape takes young the 19-year old's life experiences and fuses them into some of the most honest and hardest trap you will hear. With features from French Montana, Reema Major, JJ Money, amongst others, LP has crafted a nice tape that serves as a prelude to whatever big debut project he has planned. Look out for a Q&A with LP to be featured on Oh.Globe really soon!
