Artist Spotlight: Damute

Oh.Globe is obviously mainly a hub for hip-hop, but we don't discriminate here. After all, the base of our beloved site relies on the ability to contain and maintain an open mind toward music in general, regardless of genre. That being said, I introduce the incredibly talented 17 year old electronic (yes, I said electronic) producer from Chicago, Danny Brooks, better known as Damute. Damute is a very close affiliate to Ontario, Canada-based Limbic Records. His age serves as anything but a barrier; the dude hosts raves in the Chicago area and already has a huge discography with styles ranging from dirty electro to testing the emotional ranges of house. Damute is doing big things over in Chicago and at a young age, there's no reason for him to slow down. Look out for his new project to drop in April or May.

Artist Spotlight: Will is Chillin'

Coming straight out the Chicago underground is the phenomenon known as Will Daniels, better known as Will is Chillin'. Born and raised in Logan Square, the young man raps and produces his own stuff. A self-described hip-hop head, he began producing Sophomore year of high school because, according to him, he had had "no life". He created a short-lived rap group named DDN with a friend. That same friend was the one who convinced him to rap in the first place. As soon as a started rapping, he became obsessed with it and now all he does is create music. He is currently the leader of a crew called VOTV (Voices of the Voiceless). Will is Chillin' is one of those rare rappers who's life is defined by music.


His catalog is immensely large and when you listen you can instantly pinpoint his influences. The work ethic of Charles Hamilton (minus the batshit crazyness) with the lo-fi lyrical genius of Benefit (minus the whole falling off the facw of the Earth thing) lives in this guy's soul. His latest release, Voice of the Voiceless: Forever Chillin', perfectly encases all the techniques and styles that ol' Will has worked on with his previous projects and ties them together into an amazing album for someone without any sort of deal in place. Chicago is budding with local talent right now and Will is Chillin' is right there at the forefront.

New Mash-Up: Through The Wire (A Kanye West Mega Mashup Master Mix)

This is a bit different from what we've been featuring on Oh.Globe lately. I came across this monster of a mix by Soundcloud user JUSTENVISION that blends all of Kanye West's songs together. Needless to say, this is incredibly well done. Acapellas from Ye tracks backed by instrumentals from other Ye tracks with sick transitions from even more Ye tracks. If you're a fan of Kanye West, you're going to love this, to say the least.

Artist Interview: Supreme Regime

Yesterday, the Oh.Globe spotlight was on up and coming Chicago collective Supreme Regime. You can read the Artist Spotlight and listen to their tunes here. In the Spotlight, I mentioned an interview with member Loud Mouth. Well, I was able to also get input from another member, Jommis Jettison. Here is my conversation with a fraction of the magnificent Supreme Regime.


Me: First off, identify yourself. What's your stage name and what do you contribute to Supreme Regime?

Loud: My stage name is Loud Mouth and I bring grimey, offensive, and often emmotional lyrics to the group.

Me: Who is all in Supreme Regime?

Loud: Right now, we have a production unit also known as Green Iris who make all of our original beats. We started off with three emcees, and added the newest/younger member a couple weeks back. He's a fifteen year old emcee that goes by Smiley Nahsa.

Me: And everybody is from Chicago?

Loud: Yessir Chi born and raised.

Jettison: I'm from Northside Chicago. Pulaski and Elston.

Me: That's pretty close to me...Portage Park area here.

Jettison: That's what's up. I fuck with the Chi...I need to tour though. I'm bigger than this city. For real. We gon' make it in a second.

Me: Has growing up in Chicago influenced your music in anyway? Are you guys big fans of any local Chicago giants like the Molemen?

Loud: Growing up in Chicago has definately influenced our music in one way or the other. We definately support local artists that are on the uprise.

Me: What's the story behind the name "Supreme Regime"?

Loud: I actually wasnt behind the origin of the name, I came in after Jesse and Paul already had the name so you're going to have to go through them for that one.

Jetisson: I came up with it kinda on a whim cause it sounds cool. It's not really anything too deep. It just sounds cool. I would like to find the perfect name but it hasn't hit me yet. We are dope (Supreme) and we are a squad (Regime). It's a wonderful family that has all different skills.

Me: How did you all meet each other?

Jetisson: High school essentially.

Me: Ahh ok. Have you guys reached out to other local buzzing Chicago artists? Guys like Rockie Fresh and Calez are making noise.

Loud: We are definitely fans of both of them. However, right now we're lacking a manager so its kind of hard to get into contact with other artists. We would love to work with them in the near future if that becomes an option. However, we have talked to Chance from Savemoney about possible future collabs but nothing's set in stone. We'll see what happens.

Jetisson: Supreme Regime and Chance a lil', but its really just Supreme. Why do we need anyone else? We got it all: hooks, flows, lyrics, and creativity. We're bout this. I'm living for this.

Me: Whatever's on your Soundcloud is what I know about Supreme Regime. Is there a tape or album out? If not, what's the timetable for one?

Loud: Glad you asked. Our Soundcloud is just a ragtag bunch of singles to create some type of portfolio. We've been working on an all original album called Sloane Peterson that will be dropping within the next two months. The only song that's out to the public right now from the album is S.O.G.

Me: Ferris Bueller's Day Off reference haha. That's one of my favorite movies.

Loud: Exactly, so Chicago. And Sloane is a bad bitch so it was only right.

Me: What's your favorite hot dog joint in the Chi?

Loud: Definitely Sam's Red Hots on Armitage and Western. May 15 is the release date for Sloane by the way.

Me: Oh for sure. When that drops, we'll be all over it.

Loud: Sounds good. We appreciate the support man.

Me: One last question. If someone was to ask you "who the hell is Supreme Regime and why should I listen to them?", what would you respond with?

Loud: I'd tell him Supreme Regime are just some real ass Chi-Town cats, tryna change music and that they should listen because I guarantee they never heard or will hear anything like it.

Jetisson: Just know that we ain't a fusion of old and new hip hop, we are SUPREME REGIME. We are forever this new breed of hip-hop. It ain't labeled.

Me: Your music really should do all the talking, it's dope. Well, good luck to you guys and know that whatever you guys drop has a home at Oh.Globe.

Loud: Much appreciated man, thanks for the love.

Artist Spotlight: Supreme Regime

Supreme Regime is a Chicago based collective that is rapidly gaining buzz around the internet and around the city. Consisting of Jommis Jettison, Loud Mouth, Paul-O, Smiley Nahsa, and the production team Green Iris, the crew has established a well grounded following and they do live up to the hype. Backed by a fusion of new school techniques and rooted boom bap laced by Green Iris, the emcees of Supreme Regime mix raw lyricism with natural born Chicago swagger...they know how to construct enjoyable hip-hop. I dare you to try to keep your head from bobbing as you listen to the promo singles they got out on their Soundcloud. Look out for their debut project Sloane Peterson dropping May 11th. Also, I got a chance to speak a little with Loud Mouth, so look out for that Q&A with him posted up real soon. In the meantime, enjoy the future of Chicago hip-hop blossoming before you eyes:

Artist Spotlight: Kontakz

 Kontakz (born Gabriel Thomas) is an up and coming 20-year-old rapper from Chicago. The stage name stems from his idea of seeing music and certain aspects of life in general better than a lot of people, "like contacts".  Kontakz began writing music at the age of 9 and his passion to innovate the genre and create a legacy has only grown with age. Influenced by artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, Kanye West, UGK, Outkast, and The Cool Kids, Kontakz makes positive music and at the same time lives the lyrics that make up his songs. He prefers to be unbound by a label, proclaiming “you can’t put me in a box, because as soon as you do you’ll hear a song that’s totally different from the first one and have to reconsider”. He has a knack of flowing through his bars with an introspective but yet never boring poise. His brand of versatile, sometimes genre fusing hip-hop is a nice breath of fresh air that has personified the new school hip-hop scene rising from Chicago lately. Kontakz is poised to take major position amongst the bevy of new Chicago artists rising and gaining steam.

New Mixtape: Jahzel - First Class

Jahzel is a Chicago MC who's latest mixtape, First Class, is a fantastic display of the contemporary crossover-ready Chicago rapper: street-wise infused lines mixed with a mic presence that embodies what the unique Chicago swagger is all about. Jahzel is joined by Lil B and JBAR on tracks. He's got the versatility to make it a long way, providing both bangers and ballads backed by good production.

New Mixtape: Rockie Fresh - Driving 88

I confess: this is a little old to be considered a "new mixtape". Still, Rockie Fresh (not A$AP Rocky, not Roc Marciano, not Sir Michael Rocks)'s latest offering deserves all of the attention it can muster. The 20-year old Chicago native comes with an energetic, new-school to the definition approach that fans of the new wave of "swag rap" rappers will surely appreciate. He perfectly rides his also perfectly picked beats. Really, the great thing about Rockie Fresh is that he doesn't stay on a particular style... he can go from swag rap of the highest quality to introspective self- revelations of a 20-year old Chicagoan trying to make it in the rap game. Hopefully this tape will elevate Rockie's buzz to the next level and maybe catch him a co-sign or two from fellow Chicago rappers. A Rockie Fresh/Rhymefest collaboration sounds awfully good right about now.
