New Mixtape: Just S.T.R.E.S.S. - Bouncing Hi-Hat and Spoken Words

As you probably know based off of some of our past features, I'm a sucker for sweet beat tapes. I stumbled upon this gold nugget while looking up beats that sampled the late great Gil Scott-Heron. Just S.T.R.E.S.S. samples the legendary voice in all 8 tracks of this short but sweet little tape. Gil Scott-Heron and hip-hop goes hand in hand so a project like this was long overdue. Plus, it's got an awesome cover. Who doesn't like a creative cover? Give it a listen and drop a comment below.

You can stream the tape below or download it here.

Sample Of The Week: StewRat - Hold You Down

Every thursday, i'll be posting one sample i thought was flipped spectacularly well and be discussing it! New or old music, just something I heard that week. I'll also be trying to pick stuff that's not well known as one of the greatest samples ever or something like that. This can also be used as a weekly recommendation for an artist to look for if you're digging for samples. Listen to the video(s) in order and then read the comment at the bottom!

Sorry about skipping last week, y'all. Won't happen again!

This cut comes to us from StewRat's February 2010 beat tape, HeadLights. Chopped expertly, he took a 6 second clip and turned it into a very dope 1:27 hip-hop beat.

New Mixtape: Do The Dilla 2012

A tribute project to the man himself, J Dilla. For the reinvisioning of Dilla's art, Do The Right Print, Food for ya Soul & Feelin’ Music Brought together many beat makers from around the world to perpetuate J-Dilla’s art, in order to give to the audience a new vision of his creations.

James Dewitt Yancey, better known under the name Jaydee or J-Dilla left us on february 10th 2006 at the age of 33. This american producer and composer has worked with a lot of artists such as Busta Rhymes, Common, Slum Village, A Tribe called Quest or Madlib. Through his creation, he in- fluenced many artists and musicians across the world which is not limited to the hip hop scene. Recognize by his peers for the imprint he has left in the musical landscape, this avant-garde is today considered like being simply a genius, a virtuoso, a precursor.
For the 6th year anniversary of his death, the Food for ya Soul collective (soundcloud.com/foodforyasoul), the silkscreen print Do the Right Print studio (dotherightprint.ch) & the label Feelin Music (feelinmusic.ch) came together around a common project in memory of J-Dilla. The Do The Dilla concept is born.
The idea is to bring together different artists to work and perpetuate J-Dilla’s art in order to give the audience a new visions of Dilla’s creations. A selection of beatmakers from across the world, as well as FFYS, DTRP & Feelin Music members worked for free to create a record containing Jaydee’s classics remixed.
The album is in line (and will be given away to the audience) with a live event called «Do The Dilla» which will take place on february 11th 2012 at Le Romandie in Lausanne with guests like Brussels own DJ Lefto from the famous jazz label Blue Note, Fatoosan from the Supafly collective along with Chief, founder of Feelin’ Music and of course the Helvetico- Belgian group Food for ya Soul in full force with Ngoc Lan, DJ Chikano, Mr Comb & Boo. Like last year, the event will be hosted by Parisian Gyver Hypman.

This project is seriously great, check it out if you have ever liked J Dilla or beats in general.

Personally I've always found this to be one of my favorite and chillest beats, but some people don't agree. Kno definitely has proved that he's a master craftsman when it comes to his beats, but i felt like this was a fitting sample to start off this series.

New Beattape: Shag - Wake Up

Here it is, the highly anticipated new beat tape from shag. This whole tape brings a real Dilla-type feel to the beats. It's raw and fresh and clean at the same time. Seriously don't sleep on this one.
