Mixtape Review: The Latin Marksman 2

Mixtape Review
Nino Bless- Latin Marksman 2: R.O.A.M.

Artist: Nino Bless
Year: 2012
Rating: 8/10

http://www.datpiff.com/Nino-Bless-Latin-Marksman-2-ROAM-mixtape.391494.html

It's been three long years since Nino released the first  Latin Marksman and fans have been patiently waiting for the sequel. Despite all of the delays it's finally here and it's every bit as impressive as everyone was anticipating. The sound quality is as amazing as all of his releases which is something other mixtape rappers should learn from; just because you're releasing a free download doesn't mean you can skimp on the sound quality! Top notch lyrics as always which you come to expect with Bless, solid production and he even shows that he's not afraid to step out of his comfort zone in a few songs experimenting with a few new songs and features. The mixtape has Nino's usual features of guys like Grafh, Joell Ortiz, and Scram Jones but he even adds some new faces that you may have heard of if you pay attention to rap battles such as Soul Khan and Ness Lee. The most interesting feature comes from Cambatta who spits something that sounds more like a poetry than a rap verse on "Bonfire".

With the first song "No Love" Nino addresses the Slaughterhouse situation hoping to answer the question he gets asked the most ("Why you not in Slaughterhouse?!) and silence critics claiming that he's "bitter" about not being included in the group. He also mentions the rape of his sister and other things going on in his life showing that his attention is not just focused on the group but on more important things. The next few songs from "They Calling"(feat Ness Lee) to "Sad Song"  aren't exactly what you would expect him to rap on but he branches off into new territory perfectly. With the exception of "Sad Song" and "Going Snooki", which is the same beat of Trina feat. Ludacris' "B Alright", that entire set of songs were produced by Nemesis who I have a sneaking suspicion that Nino will be working with again soon.

The mixtape wouldn't be a true sequel without recurring elements from the first Latin Marksman. On LM Nino released a song titled "Fuck the Rap Gam" where he critized the hip-hop blogs for the content they post on their websites and how they manage the websites and on LM2 there is a song of the same light titled "MID (Music Is Dead) which is leagues above "Fuck The Rap Game". His flow and delivery cleaner, the beat is better, it's just all around a better song with a similar message which isn't to say that "Fuck The Rap Game" is a bad song or that doesn't have it's good qualities, it just isn't as enjoyable as MID. Nino's posse cut this time around is "Black Suits Fill The Room" featuring Joell Ortiz, Scram Jones, and Grafh. The beat is great and it has Biggie sample which makes any song feel epic, but sadly it falls short of Nino's last works of "3rd Degree", "Four In The Clip", and "Slaughterhouse" from his last projects. The new mixtape still has Nino's classic freestyles that his previous works had. This time around Nino has Get Ready 1-2 and his War
Machine freestyles which are all just full of quotables. Take "Get Ready" for example. When Nino isn't doing a barrage of punchlines every bar he's using wordplay with the hip-hop websites reminiscent of what he did with rapper's names on "Namedropping" from Untold Scriptures (which we're still waiting for part 2 of). Nino raises the bar for what you can do with a rhyme scheme on War Machine creating new rhymes with "multisyllabic" longer than I've heard anybody do showing rappers that if you can't keep a rhyme scheme going for at least for bars you're lazy and should be ashamed to call yourself a rapper.

The bonus tracks are all great, though a tad dated. All three of them were leaked years ago, evident by the "D.O.A.(Death Of Autotune)" reference on "Whatcha Know About Me". He makes a joke and a punchline about DOA being late, while ironically mentioning the song on a 2012 but by it merely being a bonus track it doesn't matter as much. It's a great song none the less so it's inclusion is welcomed. The standout track out of the bonus songs is "God'll Cut You Down" no question which to this day is a top 5 Nino Bless song.

All in all R.O.A.M. is a solid release. It stayed consistent quality wise with Nino's previous works while staying fresh and innovative. Nino's already high level of skill has increased over the years which bodes well for his album "A Bitch Named Karma" dropping later this year. If this mixtape is any indication of what's coming from Nino 2012 could potentially belong to Nino Bless.

New Mixtape: Wiz Khalifa - Taylor Allderdice

Wiz Khalifa exploded into the mainstream scene only a couple of years ago with his big single "Black and Yellow." That in turned spawned what would be a wild ride for the Pittsburgh MC in 2011. Wiz Khalifa has been known to drop very high quality mixtapes, and with his poorly-received major label debut Rolling Papers being his last solo effort, fans are eager to hear what he has to bring to the table.

Today they get that opportunity. Check out Wiz Khalifa's brand new mixtape Taylor Allderdice here on Oh.Globe, and make sure you keep a look out for his next studio album, O.N.I.F.C.

You can download Taylor Allderdice here, here...or here.

New Mixtape: Big K.R.I.T. - 4evaNaDay

It's finally here. Coming correct with the first high-profile release of 2012, Big K.R.I.T. releases his follow up to the critically lauded 2011 mixtape Return of 4eva. This tape serves as a placeholder for the real heavy hitter, K.R.I.T.'s debut Live from the Underground, which got pushed back (I laugh at rappers' sense of foresight). All 17 tracks are entirely produced by the Mississippi rapper/producer. We've featured a slew of do-it-yourself rapper/producer hybrids on Oh.Globe before but very, very few of them can hold a candle to Big K.R.I.T. Big K.R.I.T. is obviously a monster on the mic but his production skills are criminally underrated and he's proved with his spotless discography that he can hang with the best of the new-school of beat makers. Like Return of 4eva, which was released last March, expect 4evaNaDay to be among the best releases of the year. Also, look out for K.R.I.T.'s debut album Live from the Underground, coming out later this year. 2012 is K.R.I.T.'s to conquer.

New Remix Album: Chi Duly - Balloons of Haus (House of Balloons Remix Album)

Seeing how the Kanye West mash-up was really well received, I decided to share another great remix project that I discovered today. Brooklyn producer Chi Duly follows up his critically acclaimed Drake X Coldplay mash-up tape October's Very Own. It was only natural, as it seems, to remix The Weeknd's own critically acclaimed 2011 mixtape House of Balloons and turn it into an uptempo house/R&B hybrid...Weeknd style.

New Beattape: Paradox - Habits

Paradox is a very talented 18 year-old hip-hop producer hailing from Upstate New York. With aspiritions to work with a wide range of rappers, Paradox is on a mission to construct an impressive instrumental hip-hop catalog to showcase the talents that he was blessed with. Everybody has different taste buds in beats, and Paradox is trying to satisfy as many as he can. Paradox likes to think of himself as a sound engineer as well as a beatsmith; mixing a very impressive ear for samples (which is evident by "Ohf" and "Boom Slap" on Habits) and an expert mastering ability. Paradox does not believe in being strapped down by a niche, and as a result he does not stick to a particular "signature sound". Habits is his 2nd beattape and is by far his best work.

Also, Paradox runs a very impressive blog called The Roll Off. He is always on top of the latest happenings in the entertainment world and is always covering the latest free music releases. I strongly recommend following the site.

New Album: Loe Pesci - GOOD X 2

Montreal's Loe Pesci of OG Hindu Kush has officially dropped his solo debut GOOD X 2. He goes over very dope production from DJ Fatsak and is joined by The Narcicyst, Justice McFly, and Borden throughout. OG Hindu Kush's 2011 debut offering In 3D was among my favorites of the year and this project does not dissapoint. Pesci brings his signature wit and charm better than ever on GOOD X 2 and this is guaranteed to be getting spins for a very long time. Now if we can get a new Osa solo...

You can buy the tape off Loe Pesci's Bandcamp here or stream it here:

New Mixtape: I-20 - Celebrity Rehab

Unlike many of the recent features that Oh.Globe has had lately, I-20 is not much of a newcomer. The Decatur, Georgia representative has 2 studio albums under his belt, both released under Ludacris's Disturbing tha Peace label. He comes back from a very busy 2011 with Celebrity Rehab. The tape drops the day after Valentines Day and is a calling out to everyone that I-20 is indeed still going to be putting in heavy work and can indeed hang with the best of them in the Southern rap game. I-20's energetic delivery infused with his natural Southern twang is backed by perfectly chosen trap production to accommodate the Southern vet. He doesn't do it by himself, however, as he recruits Ludacris, Killa Kyleon, and Fat Ray, among others, to join in on a celebration of a respected vet enjoying his run. It'd be nice to see I-20 receive a burst of late-career popularity and cult following like his Southern contemporary 2 Chainz has seen recently...only time and a whole lot of buzz will tell.

New Mixtape: Blue Sky Black Death & Nacho Picasso - Lord of the Fly

This one's been out since January, but it's well worth the site space. Critically acclaimed hip-hop soundscape masters Blue Sky Black Death team up with Seattle newcomer Nacho Picasso for his follow up to his solid 2011 tape For the Glory. BSBD's dark and seemingly molasses-powered sounds compliment Picasso's often funny and blunted rhymes. Picasso shifts through styles ranging from the cockiness of Sir Michael Rocks and A$AP Rocky to the absurd and hyperbole-rich of Danny Brown or Odd Future. Being another product of the new-school crowd of charisma-centered rappers, it's a nice fresh of breath air to hear Nacho Picasso going in over production handled by the likes of producers in the style of Blue Sky Black Death.

You can download the tape off Nacho Picasso's Bandcamp here or stream it here:

New Mixtape: Brother Ali - The Bite Marked Heart

Brother Ali delivers upon his promise of a new EP on Valentines Day Eve with his latest release, the semi-appropriately titled The Bite Marked Heart. As is always expected from a Brother Ali product, the EP contains top notch production laced by Rhymesayers beat conductors Jake One and Ant (who, when coupled with Brother Ali, create some of the best chemistry in the hip-hop today). Every single project Brother Ali has given us in his career has been of the highest quality, so expect nothing less from this EP.

New Mixtape: Jahzel - First Class

Jahzel is a Chicago MC who's latest mixtape, First Class, is a fantastic display of the contemporary crossover-ready Chicago rapper: street-wise infused lines mixed with a mic presence that embodies what the unique Chicago swagger is all about. Jahzel is joined by Lil B and JBAR on tracks. He's got the versatility to make it a long way, providing both bangers and ballads backed by good production.

You can check out the video for his single "Classic Night" here:

New Mixtape: Rockie Fresh - Driving 88

I confess: this is a little old to be considered a "new mixtape". Still, Rockie Fresh (not A$AP Rocky, not Roc Marciano, not Sir Michael Rocks)'s latest offering deserves all of the attention it can muster. The 20-year old Chicago native comes with an energetic, new-school to the definition approach that fans of the new wave of "swag rap" rappers will surely appreciate. He perfectly rides his also perfectly picked beats. Really, the great thing about Rockie Fresh is that he doesn't stay on a particular style... he can go from swag rap of the highest quality to introspective self- revelations of a 20-year old Chicagoan trying to make it in the rap game. Hopefully this tape will elevate Rockie's buzz to the next level and maybe catch him a co-sign or two from fellow Chicago rappers. A Rockie Fresh/Rhymefest collaboration sounds awfully good right about now.

New Mixtape: Curren$y - Here EP

New Orleans native Curren$y is well known as one of hip-hop's heaviest workhorses. He drops material in small time periods but recently has been relatively quiet after an otherwise eventful 2011. Today, he drops his Here EP on Super Bowl Sunday. If you're not busy watching the game or have already lost interest, give it a spin. A little taste of Jet Life can be good for the soul.

New Mixtape: SpaceGhostPurrp - GXX XX BXXXX EP Vol. 1

SpaceGhostPurrp has been blowing up the past few months. His plan to bring back the "PHONK", sample old-school video games, and mix old-school Three 6 Mafia and DJ Screw vibes together has been well received in the underground community. His exposure has reached an all time high with his contributions to A$AP Rocky's Live.Love.A$AP. that dropped to considerable acclaim in 2011. GXX XX BXXXX, or God of Black to non-RVIDER KLVN linguists, is SpaceGhostPurrp's much anticipated follow-up to his BLVCKLVND RVDIX 66.6 (1991) tape that also dropped last year. Enjoy the tape RVIDER KLVN.
